One night, my friend, Sherry, decided that her son William, then about 6, should say his prayers from the heart instead of the standard child prayer “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep…” She said, “William, you need to say your prayers yourself, from your heart.”
He said, “What do you mean?”
“Well, you thank God for all you have and your family. And ask Him to take care of you and keep you safe.”
“SAFE?!?” the boy exclaimed. “He didn’t keep me safe. I got out on third base.” Sherry laughed.
“And you need to ask him for forgiveness,” she added.
“For what?” he asked.
“Ask Him to forgive your sins, you know, things you shouldn’t do,” his mom said.
With that William remarked, “No, I’m not going to do that. Because I don’t sin”
After that, every time his 3-year-old sister did anything wrong he yelled, “MOM, Caroline’s sinnin’!”
